The Pompeii ruins

Founded by the Osci near the Sarno river, Pompeii was influenced by the colonies of the Greeks settled on the coast. Later the city fell down under the domination of Cuma and the Sannitis at the end of the V century B.C. Very rich centre of commercial and cultural activities it was besieged by Silla and the city started a process of romanisation.
The 5th of February of 63 A.C., an earthquake destroyed Pompeii with its 20.000 inhabitants. The city was not already rebuilt that, on 24th August of 79 A.C, was destroyed by the eruption of the Vesuvius, covered under a high stratum of lapilli and ash. The city disinterred, it is one of the most important archeological site in the world, offer a complete view of an ancient roman centre remained the same due the stratus of material. In three days of eruption the Vesuvius deposed over 4 metres of lava.
The city was graved until the spring of 1748 when, under the King Carlo of Borbone, the Eng. Alcubierre started the escavations for a period of 200 years. In 1960 a big area of the city was at disposal for visits. The itinerary cross the places, the streets, the squares, the homes, the shops, the spas, the temples, the theatres, gives us an idea how was at the era of the eruption.
